MATILDA EVALUATION
On Tuesday the 5th of March we performed Matilda's school song in a showcase to peers, family and friends. As a whole I was happy with the groups overall performance but I will be evaluating my performance in the group piece.
I played a big kid, my role was to scare the little kids about going to school which required me to play a aggressive and intimidating character.
CHARACTERISATION
Characterisation was a big challenge for me during performances in rehearsals. Characterisation was something that I often achieved when my group practised in a separate room from the other or when I was alone. I believe this was due to a lack of confidence in portraying a threatening character. But during the performance I felt that I managed to keep that intimidating and mean character for the majority of the performance, and when I watched it back I was happy to see that I did portray characteristics of mean older kid. Something I would often do in rehearsals was when I turned on the third "Mum say im an angel" I would smile or laugh straight away breaking out of character, after doing this I would then act more mean.I was lacking in stage discipline but during the performance when I turned I did not smile, I gave a cold glare to the little kids before doing same to the audience. By doing this I felt it was easier to keep up those facial expressions throughout the song, which I did. I also was impressed by the fact that I didn't just keep the same moody face but changed it to rolling my eyes and a more mocking look especially on the line "being a prince or a princess". As well as facial expression i kept that intimidating character in my actions for example when we tweaked the choreography to make it our own in previous lessons we added more interactions with the little kids. I felt that when i performed these little movement they were sharp and impactful creating a good stage presence. I however did notice during the performance that i concentrated to much on what was gonna happen next that i lost the character for about 2 seconds but i then carried on. This was during the block choreography. But overall i think my characterisation improved greatly compared to my rehearses.
VOCAL PERFORMANCE
I personally felt that our vocal performance as a group was incredibly strong, i also felt that my vocal performance for the majority of the performance was at a high level too. Projection was a target that my group would focus on achieving in every lesson, we would play the music louder so we would have to push ourselves to sing over it and so on. So when it came to adding the piano which was much louder than the sound track i was more prepared and i feel this shows in our performance. I made sure that i sang loud and clear also aggressively to keep up that character in the vocal elements of performing as well as physical. I also made sure that i stayed in key and that i wasn't shouting out the words but pushing from our diaphragm which we had also been working on in lessons with various scales and breathing warm ups. I do think our projection was good, however i think the first half was the strongest volume wise. I feel this is due to the fact that we kept the dance level high and our stamina was a big factor, we clearly got tired as the song went on. Diction was another thing we focused on in our singing rehearsals we wanted to make sure that the audience could hear every word clearly so i definitely made the effort to warm up my mouth with some funny exercises before performing. I did this so that my mouth was able to move easily to help me sing every word intricately, i also said some tongue twisters at a high speed in order to prepare me for the fast section of the song. when it got to the fast party that starts "you listen here" my projection went down due to the higher key but the diction remained at a good level.
CHOREOGRAPHY
Choreography is something i was definitely better at doing i during rehearsals, when it came to choosing who was going to be front and centre i jumped at the opportunity. I also was the one who tweaked the choreography to make it more intimidating. But because i was always worried about being that intimidating character it was never sharp and strong but during the performance this was not the case. During the performance i made sure my movements were sharp and when i had my little interaction with the small kids i would grab them with a good sense of aggression. Musicality was also something i felt i was successful in keeping up i kept in time with the music and during our brief stomp section i kept up the rhythm. I felt prepared as during anytime i got especially in that last rehearsal when i wasn't performing because people were practising pieces in the showcase that i wasn't in, i made sure i marked the choreo to get it drilled in my head. Even though i did this i did make two mistakes. One during the block choreography as i was waiting for Nadira to push the M block and i i forgot that we had to do the opening move but when i remembered i couldn't do it straight away because i would have been out of time so i waited. The next one was at the very end i was supposed to lift up the hand in a L shape but i did the searching hand instead, but even though i made these mistakes i was happy that i didn't pull a face and carried on.
FEEDBACK
My family and friends didn't come to watch me so i received feedback from people i didn't know which i hope meant that my feedback wasn't biased at all. After the performance a girl named Zoie who went to watch Daisy said that my character was aggressive and took her by surprise. Which made me very happy as it was something i thought i wouldn't be able to do. Bonnies father told me that i had done very well especially due to the fact that i was at the centre, he said it didn't look like i was nervous which was good to hear because as i turned around i was nervous but im glad that i didn't show that and stayed professional. Lotties mum told me that my dancing was very strong and one of the strongest. After watching back the performance i received feedback also from my class mates. Daisy said that she was really impressed with my characterisation and the consistency of it as it was something she knew i had struggled with,(i would always ask her what to do character wise).
Evie said that our projection was good but it did get quieter at the key changer and towards the end which i completely agree with i definitely felt that we all got tired but we soldiered on.
If i could change one thing if we performed again it would be just to make sure that i wasn't thinking to much about what happens next during the block choreography because i also think that why i made mistakes because i was thinking about it too much.
But i feel that my confidence has definitely improved and so have my performance skills since the start of the year.
One thing i would like to improve for the future is my stamina so i can keep that energy i had at the start of the performance all the way through.
