FOURTH WEEK
SINGING LESSON: In this lesson we spent our time going through the new choreography, but our main focus for the lesson was our vocal. We started the lesson with a vocal warmup which consisted of singing fa,la,and ga, in William tales overture. This helped warmup our vocal chords. We then went on to singing the coffee pot tongue twister at a quick speed increasing in scale, we did this so we got used to cramming in words at a short time but singing them clearly. after a quick warmup me and Bonnie filled in for some members of the other group who where going to arrive late, as we did this we marked the choreography as they hadn't learnt the block work in as much detail as we did in the previous lesson. we sang through without dancing and worked on timing as members in the group would speed up. But as we did this we noticed they lost volume, so we then took time working on that by turning up the music louder in order to encourage them to sing louder. after a few more practices their other members arrived and we mad our way back to our own group.
Straight away we did a full run through with choreo including the blocks. We struggled slightly with spacial awareness and found our selves bumping into each other ad forgetting what to do, where to go during the transitions of the letters. once we realized that we had to clean this up we walked through the block section slowly without the music a couple of time to make sure everyone knew where to go and what letter they were in charge of. For example i was in charge of catching the letter G and moving of center so C could be seen, i was also in charge of revealing the Q. once everyone knew what they were doing we sang the song without the backing a couple of times before practicing with the backing track. After we practiced for the next 20 minutes the two groups were then brought together and we performed the song but without the choreo as the other group hadn't learned the block section. Feed back for us was that we had good volume and diction but wee need to work on keep the volume during the key change. My feedback for the other group was that they needed to concentrate on timing because although they had good volume it caused them to speed up, so they just needed to work on listening for the music.
My previous target which was to work on characterization has improved thanks to the examples i have seen in my research of other performances of people singing the same song. I have got more comfortable with acting meaner to the little kids by concentrating on being more of a mischievous character than a aggressive one.
DANCE LESSON: In this lesson we concentrated on characterization by adding different parts to our choreo. We started of with a warmup we started off by rolling our right shoulder toward the back twice, then placing our right hand on our shoulder rolling it back twice, then stretching our arm and circling it back on the second circle we opened out to the right side to stretch the side of the side of our body, this exercise also warmed up the joints in our arms. we then did the same thing on or left side before rolling form our head to a crouch position then opening out to a flat back which helped warm up our hip also. after this we stood up straight rolling down from our head through our neck and back to a crouch position once again.we the crawled our of the crouch with our hands into a plank position, then crawled back into the crouch position rolling up from our back through our neck and head into a stood up position, this help mobolise all the joints in our hips, legs as well as working on our spine warming it up.We then repeated this sequence again but once we were in the plank position we held it for eight counts then opened up towards the right side with out left arm supporting us for another eight counts, we then opened up on the left side with our right arm supporting us for eight counts. This engaged our core working on our abdominal muscles.after this we layed on the ground and lifted the top part of our body up, further stretching our back. after this we got up and did an leg and foot exercise that focused on concentration and co-ordination, this exercise consisted of moving our feet and lifting them in a certain rythm we also added arms with the feet to up the difficulty. I had trouble with this exercise the first couple of times, but I completed it successfully at least once on each leg including the arms.
Before we started working on our characterization we did a quick run through of the song including the block that we had learnt in previous lesson, this is how as a group we determined what parts of the choreography we could twerk in order to make our intimidating characteristics clear and more effective. After watching some other performances performed by other groups we decided to take the approach of being mischievous and taunting towards the little kids as that's what I feel like older kids did to me when I was new to school. So as a group we walked through the dance slowly without the music as we did I suggested to change the princess move from just putting our Hans up to a head like a crown, to putting our hands up to our head like a crown and moving our head side to side. I decided to do this and roll my eyes while doing the move in order to portray this mocking character. We then decided to be more threatening in our next choice of move ,which was accompanied with the line "your just wasting energy!". On "G" we stepped joining feet together originally, but I made the decision to make our chests large and roll them forward and glare out towards audience. When performing this to the class they didn't find me very intimidating so I tweeted my move as I was at the front by doing slit throat sign to come across more scary. Little who plays a little kid suggested that there should be some interaction between us and them, this is when I came up with the idea of grabbing them and shaking them back and forth. Emily came up with the idea to grab them on the line "just you wait for physical ed" more specifically on the word "ed". And shaking them for four counts. To show that the little kids are weaker and we are more aggressive.
After a couple more tweaks we performed it to the other group, in which they said the changes were a good addition to our characterization. The also performed there block sequence for us, and their strength was that they would be performing strong moves if they weren't moving a block to create a clear sense of aggression.
DRAMA LESSON: In this lesson we fiished the block choreography and had a mock performance. We started of the lesson with a quick warm up as we had a lot to get through in the lesson but we focused on both singing and body. So as a class got into groups three and four and sang I like the flowers I like the daffodils in Canon accompanied with simple dance moves compliant with the lyrics. We sang and danced continuously until miss stopped each group one by one.
After our quick warm up We did two run throughs of everything we had done in previous lessons one group used the block while the other group just had to mime the blocks. Our group had the blocks first and we were successful in remembering the choreo despite the fact we were missing a member of our group. After going through it without blocks our group started learning the rest of the choreography while the other watched so they could almost mirror what we were doing. We focused a bit on what we had to do if we weren't moving blocks and we created some choreography there. We decided that when we weren't moving block we would do the choreography from the beginning so we weren't standing there doing nothing.
I was in charge of the letters G,Q and X. Timing was a struggle for the whole group but we improved that with the practice we did with and without the music in this lesson. But I struggled a bit with the letter Q and moving it on time because I didn't want to go on the floor to early and just be sitting there, but this lead me to move the Q to late. But with more practice I think I will get the timing right. Once we completed the block choreography the other group had their chance to practice and learn while watched, they also went on to learning the very end of the choreography which we had to mirror. We learnt the hand movements sitting down until we got a chance to do it properly ourselves. After completing the whole choreography we got a chance to run through from the block sequence to the end with the music before our mock performance.
Our group went second and because we were missing a member Esther filled in from the other group. We review the film next lesson but I personally felt like our choreography side was lacking in power when it came to the new bit, but this can be improved with some practice.
