WEEK ONE OF MATILDA SCHOOL SONG

SINGING LESSON: after registration we as a whole class did basic warm ups to prepare our bodies as well as our voices for singing. We did these independently, i started my warm up with 20 star jumps as a pulse raiser so oxygen circulated my body efficiently, i then went on to do stretches reaching up to the ceiling, and circulations on each leg starting from my foot gradually going up to my whole leg to create good blood flow, this help with breathing during singing. After my little exercise as a class we got into a circle and worked on breathing as breathing was going to be important for this song. We breathed in for 7 counts then breathed out for 7, we then did the same for 8 and 10.we did the same thing a couple of times. After breathing exercise Sam hopped onto the piano and we were going to begin vocal warm ups but these were specific ones that would help us when performing the song. Sam informed us that this song required good diction and enunciation so we started of with a couple of tongue twisters gradually getting higher in scale, this warmed up our mouths getting them used to different tempos, it also warmed up our vocal cords.we started by doing how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood, then she sells sea shells on the sea shore, and finished it off with the coffee pot tongue twister, this did not only prepare our voices for enunciation and diction but it warmed them up generally too. after that we did fa's,la's, in the rhythm of William Tales overture. This was done to loosen up our vocal chords so we didnt strain them while singing.

after warming up our bodies and voices we were introduced to the song we would be learning which is the school song, we watched a video of Spirit performance company performing the song. One thing that stood out for me was how aggressive and mean the big kids were, they conveyed a lot of attitude and anger not just in there faces but there vocals also. After watching it we were given sheet music and were put into groups and were asked to learn as much as we could independently. Our group used the copycat method (listen to a line then sing it back), using this method we learnt half of the song. Once we got a good idea of the song we worked on pronunciation for the fast bit especially as we didn't want words to get lost and people not to be able to understand what we were saying. so we slowed down the music and made sure we would pronounce our T's and so on. once we got the hang of the rhythm of the part we learned, we practiced all of it continuously over and over again until it was time to perform.
After our performance i set myself a target for the next lessons, my target was to work on portraying aggression in my voice and also projection, while singing i must remember to push from my diaphragm in order to get the volume i want. To help me do this i need to imagine steaming a mirror when singing to improve my volume.

DANCE LESSON:In the dance lesson we spoke briefly about what we did in Sam's lesson before doing a thorough warm up to warm our bodies up, loosening our muscles so we wouldn't pull anything while learning the choreography.we started by jumping on the spot in parallel, first position, then second position for a bit to get our heart rate up. Then we went on to rolling our right shoulder toward the back twice, then placing our right hand on our shoulder rolling it back twice, then stretching our arm and circling it back on the second circle we opened out to the right side to stretch the side of the side of our body, this exercise also warmed up the joints in our arms. we then did the same thing on or left side before rolling form our head to a crouch position then opening out to a flat back which helped warm up our hip also. after this we stood up straight rolling down from our head through our neck and back to a crouch position once again.we the crawled our of the crouch with our hands into a plank position, then crawled back into the crouch position rolling up from our back through our neck and head into a stood up position, this help mobolise all the joints in our hips, legs as well as working on our spine warming it up.We then repeated this sequence again but once we were in the plank position we held it for eight counts then opened up towards the right side with out left arm supporting us for another eight counts, we then opened up on the left side with our right arm supporting us for eight counts. This engaged our core working on our abdominal muscles.after this we layed on the ground and lifted the top part of our body up, further stretching our back. after this we got up and did an leg and foot exercise that focused on concentration and co-ordination, this exercise consisted of moving our feet and lifting them in a certain rythm.
After our physical warm-up we did a brief vocal warm-up consisting of tongue twisters in scale, just to help us with diction and to warm up our voices for when we sang in the lesson but as it wasn't something we were focusing on in the dance lesson we didn't take long in doing this.

Nadine started off by establishing who was a little kid and a big kid within the two groups we were in last lesson. Once was mad clear the big kid were put in a triangle formation but Nadine made it clear that someone had to be central. My group chose me because dance is my strength but it was still daunting for me. Little kids were told to learn the chore also as they would have to do it later on. so we began learning the choreography which i picked up quite fast as it was quite simple, however i began to struggle once we had to do it with the music, this was because what mad the dance effective was the fact that certain moves hit certain words in the song. For example there a part where we have to push the little kids after the have been surrounded by us big kids, and we have to point toward the sky during the line "before i first heard the pealing of the bell" but we have to point on the word bell, which took me off guard quite a lot and i would go before that word  or after. this is just one example where i was struggling in that aspect of the choreo. we learnt the choreo up to what we learnt how to sing before performing it to peers. When we performed i made a couple of mistakes and struggled to get into character in fear of looking silly. So me targets for this lesson is to work on the timing of the song in order to hit the part of choreography i have learnt at the right time, i can achieve this by practicing in my own time. my second target is to work on characterization, to help me with achieving this target i am going to watch some examples of the school song to see how the big kids act and see if i can almost mimic it in my own way.

Drama Lesson: In this lesson we concentrated more on cleaning and developing what we had already learnt, we just did a quick warmup individually as we only had half the lesson one to one with the teacher between each group.
We started of by doing a run through of what we learnt previously for Nadine so she could note what we needed to brush up on, once we did this we then slowly ran through it step by step without the music singing along with it. One this Nadine noticed was that we needed work on timing with the lyrics so she established for us which word when with which move. for example we had to look on the "d" of tragedy, so we brushed up on little details like that. throughout the choreography which helped me out alot with my previous target as i found myself making less mistakes. But one thing Nadine noticed was that i needed to work on being meaner to the little kid as i lost my character in that aspect of the dance because was being to "nice" to them. so that is something i need to work on but i feel that ties in alot with my lack of confidence because i think to much about what other people might say,  but i just need to learn not to care because if i want a good grade i need to play the role i have been given without doubting myself.
